New CEO of British Aerospace, Charles Woodburn, has made his presence felt with a bold move to drive efficiencies at the defence and aerospace group. The plan to cut almost 2000 jobs represents a significant blow to the UK’s defence manufacturing capability, as reported by the Financial Times. While Woodburn has emphasised his plans to boost performance and innovation, many are equating the cuts with a shift to overseas defence spending.

These cuts come less than a month after Professor Iain Gray wrote about the British aviation industry’s quickly declining role in the development of technologies, and the need to shift focus to high-value design if the British industry is to be involved in shaping the future of aviation.
